Diamond Clarity

Ideally, diamonds should be clear and free from any blemishes. However, most diamonds that are mined have naturally occurring blemishes that can detract from the pure beauty of the diamond. Clarity refers collectively to the size, number, nature, shade and position of the imperfection present or absent in a diamond.

There are two categories of imperfections- inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). Clarity is graded using a very precise and complex method of evaluating the size, location, and visibility of inclusions. The clearer the diamond, the more valuable it is. The terms usually used in referring to the clarity of a diamond are 10x magnification (loupe) and the naked or unaided eye.

FLAWLESS (FL) Shows no inclusions or blemishes of any sort under 10x magnification when observed by an experienced grader.

INTERNALLY FLAWLESS (IF) Has no inclusion when examined by an experienced grader using 10x magnification, but will have some minor blemishes.

VERY VERY SLIGHTLY INCLUDED (VVS1-VVS2) Contains minute inclusions that are difficult even for experienced graders to see under 10x magnification.

VERY SLIGHTLY INCLUDED (VS1-VS2) Contains minute inclusions such as crystals, clouds, or feathers when observed with effort under 10x magnification.

SLIGHTLY INCLUDED (SI1-SI3) Contains inclusions (clouds, included crystals, knots, cavities, and feathers) that are noticeable to an experienced grader under 10x magnification.

INCLUDED (I1-I3) Contains inclusions (possibly large feathers or large included crystals) that are obvious under 10x magnification and will be seen with the naked eye. This may affect transparency and brilliance.
